Our Story

 

Hi! I’m Chris, founder of Flavour Boy and I’m on a mission to make the world’s tastiest condiments that also happen to be easy on the gut. 

I’ve always been a passionate cook and massive foodie, with food running in the family. My grandpa ran one of the first Chinese restaurants in Melbourne’s China Town, and my Dad used to work as a chef. 

Around 7 years ago I was diagnosed with IBS when I realised that some of my favourite foods such as garlic, onion, and mushrooms were making me incredibly bloated and gassy. For many years I lived in denial, truly believing that without garlic and onion, there could be no flavour. Unfortunately for me (and those around me), that meant constant discomfort and a lot of gas.

When I turned 30 last year, I decided it was time to grow up and start taking my flatulence seriously. I spent countless hours in supermarkets, asian grocers, and delis, studying the ingredients of all of my favourite condiments and sauces. It turns out that garlic and onion are in almost everything, and it is impossible to find sauces without them. It seemed that I was destined for a life without flavour. 

Before I started cutting out garlic and onion, one of my favourite things to do (and eat) was to make Chinese style chilli oil. I used to make big batches, particularly around Christmas, and give them out as presents.

The more I spoke to people about my gut issues, the more I realised that I was not alone. There are many of us out there, some in denial like I was, and others that are resigned to a life without flavour. That’s when I had the idea that maybe there was a way to create a garlic and shallot free chilli oil that was still packed with flavour.

Flavour Boy was born. 

After many months of experimenting in the kitchen, using garlic and shallot infused oils matched with other high quality ingredients, I can say with confidence that I’ve created a chilli oil that’s even better than the original. 

But, I’m not going to stop there. I’m on a mission to replicate this with all of my favourite condiments and sauces, whether that be curry pastes, seasonings, or dips - there will be flavour. 

My hope is that one day Flavour Boy’s condiments will be in every household, being enjoyed by all, regardless of their intolerances.
